What EN 343 Actually Tests, and Why Fabric Alone Isn't Enough
EN 343 rates protective rainwear on two separate values, each scored 1 to 4:
X value, waterproofness: tests water penetration resistance across the whole garment, fabric and seams together, not the fabric alone.
Y value, breathability: measures water vapor permeability, so a jacket can be fully waterproof and still trap sweat if this value is low.
Optional rain tower test: an “R” rating means the finished garment was tested under simulated rainfall, not just bench-tested.
A jacket rated purely on its fabric’s waterproof coating, with no seam or whole-garment test, tells a buyer far less than an EN 343 class number.
PU vs PVC Coating: Choosing the Right Waterproof Backing
The coating behind the fabric changes weight, flexibility, and durability as much as the shell fabric itself:
PU (polyurethane) coating: lighter and more flexible, better breathability, the common choice for a wearable rain jacket.
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) coating: heavier and stiffer, maximum waterproofing and abrasion resistance, common on heavy-duty storm and marine builds.
PU generally trades some raw waterproofing for flexibility and comfort, while PVC trades comfort for durability, we’ll match one to your end use rather than defaulting to whichever is cheaper that season.
