The single biggest risk in a bulk leather order isn't the design, it's inconsistency.
One jacket with a visible scar panel, another slightly off in color, a third that cracks at the elbow within a season. The word “leather” covers an enormous range of quality, and a supplier who won’t specify the grade is leaving room to substitute a cheaper hide mid-order without technically lying to you. Full-grain retains the hide’s natural surface and is the most durable grade. Top-grain is sanded for a more uniform finish, slightly less durable. Genuine leather, despite sounding premium, is actually the least durable of the three, a naming quirk that catches first-time buyers off guard.

Full-Grain vs. Top-Grain vs. Genuine Leather
- Full-grain: The hide’s natural top layer, markings and all. Most durable grade, develops a patina with age.
- Top-grain: Sanded and buffed for a more uniform, blemish-free look. Slightly less durable, more consistent across a batch.
- Genuine leather: Cut from the layers beneath the top grain. Real leather, but the least durable of the three despite the premium-sounding name.

Chrome Tanning vs. Vegetable Tanning
- Chrome tanning: Chromium salts, faster and more affordable, produces the soft, consistently colored leather most people picture. Used on most commercial leather goods.
- Vegetable tanning: natural tree-bark tannins, takes weeks not days, produces a firmer hide that develops a visible patina. Generally the more eco-conscious process, and the kind of practice assessed under standards like the Leather Working Group’s manufacturer standard
